This submission focusses on Aqueous Communes, habitats that negotiate between land and water and attempt to make peace between them through Architecture. Gorakhpur District, the site for the aqueous communes is a rapidly growing region in the mid-Gangetic belt. Within the district, Sonbarsa Village sits at the confluence of River Rapti and Aami and is seasonally affected by riverine floods.
This project addresses the migrant community of Sonbarsa who lives in low lying areas and is severely affected with the flooding, water logging, asset loss, extreme temperature, poor water supply, deteriorating water quality and spread of water borne diseases. Aqueous communes enable them a safe habitat that is resilient to the floods and that soaks and recycles the flood water for communities own benefit.
