The project aims to understand women's traditional gender roles and the impact it has on their mental health. What Covid-19 has highlighted is how difficult it is for us to stay at home for an extended period of time. These women, primarily homemakers have being staying at home all their lives in the name of love, responsibility, duty etc, their voices being unheard. It is trying to address a very deeply ingrained problem in the society that almost doesn't seem like a problem at all by bringing these stories out and building solidarity amongst women.
The pandemic has shown us is how difficult it is to live indoors for an extended period of time, how claustrophobic and limiting it can feel. For some women in the world, that is their everyday reality, even without the virus. This project aimed to question traditional gender roles, unpaid care work, and the effects of that on women's mental health.
Take Up Space is an online community platform that connects intergenerational Indian women and Indian immigrants in the UK together. It is a series of workshops that aims to re-instill value in homemakers in India and the UK, particularly from the ages of 40-50 yrs. It encourages women to speak, be heard, connect and share while breaking the idea of perfection that is so deeply instilled in women.
