Director, London Design Biennale

Based in London. Deadline 10 September 2017. Salary on application.

We are looking for a Director, with great leadership skills and a strong international network, to steer the London Design Biennale through its second edition and beyond. The Director will lead the team that delivers the Biennale, making sure it is another successful event that further embeds itself in London's cultural calendar. They will oversee all operations, liaising and building relationships with countries, sponsors and the jury. The candidate will be a proven creative strategist, able to think of creative ways in which to grow the event, ensuring its financial success. They will have delivered successful exhibitions of quality, ambition and scale.

* Build relationships with embassies and participating cultural institutions
* Liaise with sponsors and the international advisory committee and jury
* Manage the budget and finance of the event, involving regular reporting
* Lead on all aspect of event planning, working with the wider project team
* Work with the Biennale's PR, Exposure, and the Head of Communications to deliver a press and marketing campaign
* Lead the relationship with the directorate and teams at Somerset House
* Work with Pentagram on the Biennale's identity, print collateral, advertising and on-site signage
* Plan the exhibition opening with the events team, hosting events, and the VIP awards ceremony
* Oversee a conference and talks programme relating to the theme
* Promote the event internationally, presenting at similar events to raise awareness of the Biennale
* Think of creative ways in which to achieve ticket sales and realise financial targets, and further grow the event
* Work with the Artistic Director to ensure the quality and integrity of installations

* Strong international network and contacts, including in the design sector
* Proven experience running a cultural body or organisation, and delivering a large-scale exhibition or event.
* Solid knowledge of performance reporting and financial/budgeting processes
* Commercial awareness partnered with a strategic mindset
* Excellent organisational and leadership skills
* Outstanding communication and interpersonal abilities

Exhibition Manager, London Design Biennale
Salary: competitive; based on experience


We are looking for an Exhibition Manager, with great organisational skills and a proven track record, to join
the London Design Biennale team. You will play a central role in the smooth delivery of a world-class event
at Somerset House, one of London's most-visited attractions. The Exhibition Manager will have the
opportunity to input on all aspects of the Biennale, helping to shape and improve the public's experience of
its international programme, and further integrating the event into London's cultural calendar. You will be
responsible for the development and co-ordination of all aspects of the exhibition experience, including the
recruitment of an event delivery team, gallery assistants and volunteers; the implementation of the ticketing
strategy; and the planning of a prestigious medal ceremony and opening event.

The London Design Biennale:
The Biennale launched last year across the entirety of Somerset House, with 37 countries from six

continents presenting original work on the theme, Utopia By Design. Each national entry is curated and
administered by a leading institution, including the V&A, Triennale Museum, MAK, Vienna and Cooper

The theme of the 2018 London Design Biennale (4-23 September) is Emotional States, exploring design
and well-being, and it is expected over 40 nations will exhibit installations in response. The exhibition will be
accompanied by an international conference and talks programme that will further explore important issues
about design, strong emotional responses and real social needs.

* Managing and implementing the visitor experience, including on-site signage and visitor flow, the
box office and on-site staffing
* Managing and coordinating the ticketing strategy, working closely with the venue
* Staffing plan and recruitment of an event delivery team, including a volunteer programme
* On-site staff management including training, briefing and scheduling
* Special event planning and management for openings, previews and VIP events
* Supporting the team to deliver a Talks Programme / Conference
* Implementation of an exhibition evaluation survey
* Conducting site visits with design teams and supporting the Director, as required

* 6 years minimum relevant experience in an exhibition management role
* Track record in managing visitor experience, including ticketing and box office
* Demonstrable diplomatic skills and the confidence to deal with high-profile contacts
* Team management experience
* Database management experience
* Excellent time management skills
* Ability to work well in a small team while being able to manage and prioritise your own workload
